“I went back to Ohio”

Posted in Uncategorized by amandalinn on October 17, 2008

I hooked up that free sitemeter. It doesn’t seem to synch up with the wordpress stats some how. But anyway I have been getting a lot of hits from Ohio and I don’t know who it is… I think it might be Joe the Plumber?!

Love it:) At one point I thought I had a stalker out of Reston, Virginia. It seemed like the CIA was living on my site, hours and hours per day. I felt really, really stupid when I realized it’s the central headquarters for AOL.

Haha, you are self-stalking, you pre-vert.

Me too! You are a very sweet person! And I hope you get some breaks in life REAL SOON!

    I’m from Ohio. But I don’t stalk you . . . . too much.

    Heh heh heh

Oh scary! :) But at least you’re not Joe or Sam or whatever his name was…

I think Joe the Plumber is out looking for companies to buy. He’s too busy for the likes of us.

We don’t have tv, much to Pamajama’s chagrin, so I’m getting this all on the internet via things like CNN.com and random blogs. I often forget everyone does not go to the CNN fact check page every day so I’m sure I have a skewed view of the election coverage. Sometimes I’ll accidentally click on a Fox blog and get horrified and frightened at the biases and hate.

Anyway the point is, I watched yahoo.com’s roundup of all the comedians talking about Joe the Plumber, and this is the one (Biden on Leno) that made me laugh out loud and hit pause to recover:

“The neighborhood I grew up, even the neighborhood I live in now, which is a really nice neighborhood, I don’t know many plumbers who are making $250,000 a year and worried about it,” Biden said. “We’re kind of worried about Joe the fireman, Joe the policeman, Joe the real plumber with a license.”

I watched video of Sam “Joe” asking the question and future-president Obama answering it. McCain called it a hard question, but it was simple: “if I made this much money, would you raise my taxes?” and the answer was, in summary, his taxes would go back to what they would have been, before W’s tax cut, and he would pay an extra few thousand ($3000? $5000? I don’t know) a year out of his $250,000 profit.

That’s profit. That means he billed out parts and his employee’s labor and any insurance he felt charitable enough to provide as well as liability insurance, company vehicles, gasoline… and there’s two hundred and fifty thousand dollars left over. So with one year’s profit he could pay cash on a condominium in most cities. But $3000 extra in taxes might PREVENT HIM FROM BUYING THE BUSINESS AND CREATING JOBS. oh noes!

Obama pointed out that “Joe” would have been able to buy the business sooner, if his taxes had been cut when he was making less.

To me, this was a textbook example of why it would not be a huge burden to people making over $250,000 to pay a little more. Obama said he personally would not mind paying more taxes. (If I paid $250,000 a year, I would not mind paying more taxes either.)

But it seems like this is also a textbook example of the way some people feel: “no matter how much money I make it will not be enough. And that would be my $3000 and I might need it for gas for the Maserati.”

But I just don’t get why so many people feel this way when they are making less than half of the example in the question (which turned out to be completely hypothetical even in Joe’s case). Are they voting based on the chance they win the lottery?

I hate to crush your illusions but, er, after perusing your posts, I really doubt Joe the Plumber reads your blog. I’m so sorry. I understand your disappointment. If it is any comfort to you, I would surmise Joe the Plumber is not an adept of my series on Gay Pride Parade either.

The numbers in the last two elections have proven that an enormous amount of people voted against their own financial interests. The conservative right (read Monsieur Rove) has a knack for mobilizing small town folks around value issues (gay marriage, patriotism, religion) and make them vote in a way that comes back to bite them in the ass.

I think there is also a mass propaganda machine that dispels notion that only profits $250,000 and above will be taxed at a higher rate. That being said, I came across a site the other day that boasted that 75% of small businesses were making more than $250,000 in yearly profit. I asked the man to provide his source for the number and he replied it was personal experience (sigh) You may have had 1,000 knuckle heads who read his post and took that number for gospel. Probably the same ones who think Obama is a Muslim.

I think that in the end, no matter who gets elected, taxes will have to be raised. We have not paid for the Iraq war yet. We owe a lot o’ money to China. Someone is going to have to pay for the 700 billion bail out/rescue/whatever plan. We, the people, will eventually pay for the mistakes of millions who voted for Bush. I think these voters should foot the bill.

See what happens when you get me started!!!!

“I really doubt Joe the Plumber reads your blog.” Alas, reality never lives up to my paranoid fantasies…

“I think these voters should foot the bill.” I always thought those voters and their offspring should go to Iraq. I may be a bit harsh.

I was very upset after the last Presidential election. I couldn’t believe I had to keep sharing a country with people who fell for that *twice*.

“See what happens when you get me started!!!!”
It’s all about the comments. Welcome.

I was pretty frustrated after the last presidential election, too. I worked with someone who said “I don’t bother to vote. It never changes anything.”

I told him “You moron, this is YOUR fault!” If everyone else who is so apathetic about voting would just take 15 minutes of their day and do it, things would be so incredibly different…

Just found your site (you commented on mine) and wanted to say hello. I am going to be kicking around here a bit so you might see more Ohio hits!
Welcome, fivehusbands! Some of my most enlightening blog reading has been about your five husbands, with my boyfriend. He’s learning a lot about why some of us do certain things, and asks questions that lead us to good discussions. Thank you for being so forthright on your blog.
